The Fourth Confession

Thomas J. Walls

What a SPECtacular café! Thomas J. Walls, a former Opticians, (yes I did intend the pun at the start) turned botanical inspired café offers coffee lovers a warm greeting, popular coffee choices and classic brunch options.

Established in 2016 by the coffee connoisseur Johnathan Sharp - who is also the owner of  Kilimanjaro, Project Coffee and Blackwood Coffee - Thomas J. Walls respects the previous Opticians' layout, keeping the vintage panelled walls, glass, and wooden flooring. With botanical accents creating a bohemian vibe, Thomas J. Walls have brought life to the muted browns amidst the café's structure, with bright greens contrasting against the vintage woodwork.
Dark, metal-framed chairs surround their circular tables, creating a comfortable setting to enjoy coffee with friends, watch the world go by or read the next chapter of your favourite book. There is also limited window seating available to those who wish to focus their gaze on the outside world or appreciate the rare Scottish sunshine.

I really appreciated their amber-lit fire which brought warmth to the café, creating a comforting aura and adding light to our more frequent dull and damp evenings, whilst encouraging customers to come in and enjoy a hand-crafted coffee, supplied by Red Brick.
The Square Mile Coffee Roasters boast a unique blend of coffee with almond, berries and fudge undertones leaving a slightly bitter aftertaste (not my favourite) but is paired well with a tray bake; - if you ever decide to visit, try their maple-sweet granola square with a flat white, topped with half a spoonful of brown sugar, you will not be disappointed. This art-deco inspired coffee house also offer dairy alternatives including soya milk, which can be enjoyed as a flat white or frothy cappuccino, with a generous dusting of chocolate.

Located just beyond Edinburgh's Royal Mile, Thomas J. Walls is the perfect place to warm our hands against the roaring fire or against a hot cup of coffee during our cold winter evenings.
